Interactive Groundwater (IGW): An innovative digital laboratory for groundwater education and research
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we present an award-wining software environment for groundwater education and research. The software functions as a “digital laboratory” in which students can freely explore: visually creating an aquifer of desired configurations and then immediately investigating and visualizing the groundwater system. Students learn by active exploration and interaction. The software allows introducing routinely research and complex problem solving into the classroom.

IGW/DL: A Digital Library for Teaching and Learning Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling
Introduction Since the advent of the Internet era and the World Wide Web, teaching and learning has no doubt become easier and resources more accessible. Currently, there is a wealth of useful information freely available online for teaching and learning hydrogeology and groundwater modeling. However, few are as well designed and visually compelling as an educational digital library (DL) called...
متن کاملInteractive Ground Water (IGW)
IGW is a software environment for real-time 2D and 3D groundwater modeling. The software functions as a ‘‘numerical laboratory’’ in which the modeler can freely explore: visually creating an aquifer of desired configurations and then immediately investigating and visualizing the groundwater system. IGW allows the modeler’s thought processes to progress naturally and intuitively with the informa...
متن کاملA New Paradigm for Groundwater Modeling
We present in this paper an innovative and sophisticated software environment, called Interactive Groundwater (IGW), for unified deterministic and stochastic groundwater modeling. Based on a set of efficient and robust computational algorithms, IGW allows simulating complex, 3D unsteady flow and solute transport in saturated porous media subject to both systematic and “random” stresses and geol...
متن کاملMining lakes as groundwater-dominated hydrological systems: assessment of the water balance of Mining Lake Plessa 117 (Lusatia, Germany) using stable isotopes
In the present study, the stable isotopes υ18O and υ2H were used for assessment of the water balance in a heterogeneously structured catchment area in the Lusatian Lignite Mining District, in particular, for estimation of the annual groundwater inflow and outflow (IGW and OGW) of Mining Lake Plessa 117. The application of stable isotopes was possible since the water exchange in the catchment ar...
متن کاملA real-time, interactive steering environment for integrated ground water modeling.
We present in this note an innovative software environment, called Interactive Ground Water (IGW), for unified deterministic and stochastic ground water modeling. Based on efficient computational algorithms, IGW allows simulating three-dimensional (3D) unsteady flow and transport in saturated media subject to systematic and "random" stresses and geological and chemical heterogeneity. Adopting a...
